Reading Qu'raan over a month

Reading the Qur’aan in Ramadhaan – How the Salaf divided the portions for reading

There are 29 or 30 days in a lunar month. This table can help you divide your time to ensure you read the whole Qur’aan within the month of Ramadhaan or any month.

The printed mushaf today is divided into 30 equal parts to ease the reading of one part each day. In the past the Salaf did not have this division but instead relied upon reading full suwar (plural of surah). So it is better to read a whole surah like the salaf did in order not to break off in the middle of a topic. This issue is mentioned by Shaykhul Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah in ‘Majmoo’ al Fataawa’ vol. 13 p405-416.

A fast recording of the whole Qur'aan

A fast recording of the whole Qur'aan.

Recited by Khaleefah at Tunaiji

Fast speed 10 hours total
Normal speed 17 hours

Listening to the fast recording can help a person revise what he has memorized in a short time. It can also help a person to read more Qur'aan in Ramadhaan and other special times such as the 10 days of Dhul Hijjah etc.

Reciting the Qur'aan at a fast pace is permissible as long as no letters are lost or blended and that you can still understand what is being recited.
This is called Hadr.

This is different to those who recite so fast that you cannot make out what they are saying.

To listen to each Surah recited at a fast pace click on the link below:

Listening to Qur'aan same reward as reading

Do not let a day pass without reading Qur'aan

Reading from the Mushaf better than off by heart

A Person who reads from the Mushaf is better than the one who reads off by heart.

Extract from the Ramadhaan lecture by Shaykh Saalih Fawzaan:

"Reading from the Mushaf (written copy of the Qur’aan) is better than reciting from memory because the one who is reading something that is written can reflect on it more than others. Reading from the mushaf is closer to reflection because he is looking at the written aayaat in front of him. If he looks at them he loves them and reflects upon them. This is the reason why reading from the mushaf is better in this month and at other times. A person who reads from the mushaf is better than the one who recites off by heart from his memory."

Daily Portions

Trial Run

Train yourself to read the whole Qur'aan over a month.

Just as sports people train their muscles for the big event.
Train yourself to complete the Qur'aan every month so that in Ramadhaan it will be easier for you بإذن الله!

A Muslim should constantly read the Qur'aan everyday. This is from the Sunnah.

Time limits mentioned in  various  ahaadeeth to complete the full reading of the Qur'aan are:

3 days
5 days
7 days
10 days
15 days
20 days
25 days
30 days
40 days

Rectify yourselves before Ramadhaan.

If you are not able to read the Qur'aan well then still listen to it every day. This eventually will help you with fluency in your reading and also memorisation with less effort إن شاء الله.

Remember to set aside a fixed time to read or listen to your daily portion.
Make your intention sincerely for Allaah.
Always try and stop after a complete surah. If you are not able to, then stop where meanings are complete.

I will send out the audio of the suwar for each day to listen to and follow إن شاء الله.

Allaah grant us and you success.
وفقنا الله وإياكم

The People of Qur'aan - Shaykh Fawzaan

The People of Qur'aan - Shaykh Fawzaan

📌أهل القرآن (شيخ صالح الفوزان) السؤال:  نحن طالباتٌ نحفظُ ونكررُ الْقُرآن منذُ عشر سنوات تقريبًا لكن أنا وبعض البنات معي لم نَحْفَظُهُ أبدًا عن ظَهْرِ قَلب هل نُعْتَبر خَاتِمَات لِلقرآن ومِنْ أهل القرآن وخاصته ؟

We are students who have been memorizing and repeating the Qur'aan for nearly 10 years. However, I and some of the students with me have not memorized the Qur'aan by heart. Can we be considered from those who have completed the Qur'aan and of those who are from the special people of Qur'aan (Ahlul Qur'aan wa khaasatuh).

The People of the Qur'aan are those who actually act upon the Qur'aan and not just memorize it. Those who memorize it and act upon it or act upon it even though they've not memorized it, they are the People of Qur'aan. Everyone who acts upon the Qur'aan is from the People of the Qur'aan whether he has memorized it or not. As for someone who has memorized it without acting upon it, then he is not from the People of the Qur'aan.

A Cure for the Hardness of the Heart

A Cure for the Hardness of the Heart

دَواءُ قَــسْوَةِ القَــلْبِ قَـالَ العلّامــة ابنُ بـازٍ-رَحِمهُ الله: أحسن ما يُوصى به لعلاج القلب وقسوتـه: العناية بالقرآن الكريـم، وتدبـره، والإكثار من تـلاوته، مع الإكثار من ذكـر الله عَـزّ وَجَـل

The best of what has been advised with to cure the heart and the hardness of the heart is giving attention to the Noble Qur'aan, reflecting upon it, reading it often and remembering Allaah the Exalted and Glorious often.

فإن قـراءة القـرآن الكَــريم، بالتدبّر والإكْثَار من ذكـر الله، وقـول ”سبحان الله والحمد الله ولا إله إلا الله والله أكبر“ ، و ”سبحان الله وبحمده سبحان الله العظيم“ ، ” لا إله إلا الله وحده لا شريك له له الملك وله الحمد يحيي ويميت وهو على كل شيء قدير“ ، كل هذه من أسباب إزالـة القسوة.

Reading Qur'aan with reflection and remembering Allaah often, saying SubhaanAllaah walhamdulillah wa laa ilaaha illAllaah wAllaahu akbar, and SubhaanAllaahi wa bihamdihi SubhaanAllaahil Adheem, laa ilaaha illAllaah wahdahu laa shareeka lah lahulmulk walahul hamd yuhyee wa yumeet wa huwa 'alaa kulli shayin qadeer. All of these are reasons for the removal of the hardness of the heart.

Rewards for Reciting the Qur'aan

Rewards for Reciting the Qur'aan

وعن ابن مسعود رضي الله عنه قال ‏:‏ قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏:‏ ‏ "‏من قرأ حرفًا من كتاب الله فله حسنة، والحسنة بعشر أمثالها لا أقول‏:‏ ألم حرف، ولكن ألف حرف، ولام حرف، وميم حرف‏"‌‏(‌‏(‏راوه الترمذي وقال‏:‏ حديث حسن صحيح‏)‌‏)‌‏.‏

Ibn Mas'ud (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said,

"Whoever recites a letter from the Book of Allah, he will be credited with a good deed, and a good deed gets a ten-fold reward. I do not say that Alif-Lam-Mim is one letter, but Alif is a letter, Lam is a letter and Mim is a letter."

The Correct Belief Regarding the Qur’aan

The Correct Belief Regarding the Qur’aan

• The Qur’aan is the Speech of Allaah, uncreated.
• The Qur’aan is an Attribute of Allaah.
• Some Deviant Sects believe that the Qur’aan is created and deny Allaah’s Attribute of Speech.
• Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal was tortured due to this issue of the Qur’aan being ‘uncreated’.
• Some deviant/ ignorant people say “My recitation of the Qur’aan is created/uncreated” Very inaccurate and potentially dangerous statement.

Ibn Abee Daawood mentions in his poem ‘Haa’iyyah:

“And do not say that the Quran is created, meaning: its recitation, since the Speech of Allaah, through its recitation, is made clear.”

Ahlus Sunnah say
الصوت صوت القاري و الكلام كلام الباري

“The voice is the voice of the reciter and the speech is the Speech of the Originator (Al Baaree is one
of the Names of  Allaah). ”

Meaning:

That which is being recited is the Speech of Allaah, as for the recitation and the action (of recitation), then it is the speech of the creation, his voice is created and his pronunciation is created….. Those who recite the Qur’aan differ (from each other), some of them have been given beautiful voices whilst others have not been given that, but as for the Speech of Allah – Majestic and Most High – then of course it is of the highest perfection.

What is a month?

What is a month?

When does a day start in the Islamic calendar?

A month is either 29 or 30 days according to the sighting of the moon.
Muslims follow the lunar (moon) calendar.
The solar or sun calendar has 10 extra days each year.

A day in Islam starts from Maghrib sunset and ends the next day at sunset Maghrib.  That is why the night comes before the day.
When Ramadhaan is announced and fasting starts from fajr. The night before that fajr is the 1st night of Ramadhaan and so Muslims pray Taraweeh prayers.
This means you can start reading the Qur'aan from the 1st night before the day and before you fast.

It is not obligatory to complete the whole Qur'aan in Ramadhaan but it is highly recommended.

وفقكم الله Allaah grant you success

If you fall behind in reading

If you fall behind then do not skip the portion – try and catch up and then continue. Do not give up! Do not let shaytaan convince you that because you have fallen behind then it is not worth trying to catch up.

Think of all the hours and minutes we have in the day. A person may spend hours in the day checking WhatsApp messages, emails, social media accounts, surfing the internet, watching useless (never mind haraam) content on YouTube etc. Dedicate at least an hour to reading the Qur’aan a day with a set time. Arrange your life around the Qur’aan and do not try and squeeze the Qur’aan reading into your life. Give it the value and time it deserves and do not let it be an ‘extra activity’ only if you have spare time.

Note that days 1-12 have the same number as the Surah you are reading. One surah per day except for day one.

Days 12-18 you read two whole suwar.

Days 19 onwards you read more than two suwar.

Each day you are almost reading the same as one juz - slightly more or less than 20 pages.

Allaah grant us all sincerity and help us to follow the Sunnah aameen.
