What is a month?

What is a month?

When does a day start in the Islamic calendar?

A month is either 29 or 30 days according to the sighting of the moon.
Muslims follow the lunar (moon) calendar.
The solar or sun calendar has 10 extra days each year.

A day in Islam starts from Maghrib sunset and ends the next day at sunset Maghrib.  That is why the night comes before the day.
When Ramadhaan is announced and fasting starts from fajr. The night before that fajr is the 1st night of Ramadhaan and so Muslims pray Taraweeh prayers.
This means you can start reading the Qur'aan from the 1st night before the day and before you fast.

It is not obligatory to complete the whole Qur'aan in Ramadhaan but it is highly recommended.

وفقكم الله Allaah grant you success
